Shame Counter

What the fuck is that Shame Counter thing all about?

Well… the number that is displayed is the number of gay blogs that Google/Blogger has closed down in the past couple of years.  And that is just the number that has been reported, the real count is no doubt much much higher.

I created this as a way to show my support, as a gay blogger, for all the work a couple of guys have done on our behalf.  They have worked tirelessly to bring this issue to light and have helped hundreds of bloggers work through the mind-numbing process of trying to get your blog back after it is suddenly shut down, without warning, and without reason.

If you think this is only porn blogs it happens to, you are wrong!  It happens all the time, spend some time on the site the counter links to Google/Blogger Closes Gay Blogs, and you will get a sense of the magnitude of this and the devastation being unleashed.  I don’t want to suggest for a second that this is some Google conspiracy targeting gay bloggers, Google’s spam robots are wreaking havoc on the whole blogging community, but it seems that gay bloggers are particularly susceptible.

But this is tumblr, this place is so gay, that doesn’t happen here… IT DOES… we just don’t notice… because they just disappear as if they closed their accounts and moved on, the way so many do.  And as much of a farce as the Google Spam review process is, at least they have a process, here you have nothing… you just disappear… If Google can be convinced to be accountable for their decisions, then it will spill over to here, and every other free storage provider that acts with the same impunity.

This is not about attacking Google or tumblr, or anyone else, it is about supporting people fighting on our behalf, and about increasing awareness of how much this goes on, right under our noses.

Whether on tumblr, blogger, nibblebit, wordpress, facebook, or anyplace else… we all share the same pride in our little creations, and they are continually being wiped away, without reason, and without recourse.

Lend your support, make yourself aware, speak up!
